Early life

Tony Yayo was born and raised in the Harlem’s neighbourhood of New York City, where he lived with his mother for most of his childhood. His father died when he was young, so it is unclear how much Tony looked up to him as a role model or whether he had any male influences in his life. His mother was a nurse, and Tony often helped her when she wasn’t at the hospital. As an adolescent, Tony became involved in drug dealing with making some money because of their financial struggles as a family.

Tony Yayo never knew what it felt like to have stability and security, but he never let that stop him from working hard to achieve his dreams. He took care of his mother and sister as a teen by providing for them with the money he made selling drugs on the streets of Harlem.

Tony Yayo has been heavily involved in hip hop since 1994 when rapper The Notorious B.I.G. heard his demo tape, and he was signed to Biggie’s label, Junior M.A.F.I.A Records in 1997 after rapper Lil’ Kim introduced him as a protégé of The Notorious B. I. G.
